Autumn Placemat

The Autumn Placemat is a wonderful way to bring a little Fall decor into your home. You will also be practicing the Reversible Granny Square, and Extended Crochet Stitches.

The Reversible Granny Square keeps your Granny Squares from leaning in the middle so you get a nice straight appearance. It also means that it looks good on both sides.

The pattern alternates Regular Double Crochet and Extended Double Crochet. Instead of a 'square' you end up with a rectangle. The Autumn Placemat has the same number of stitches on all sides, it's the alternating the two stitches that changes the shape.

Crochet Materials & Tools for the Autumn Placemat

Yarn: Red Heart Super Saver “Fall” - between 95 & 100 yards, and Red Heart Super Saver “Warm Brown” - between 63 & 65 yards.

Hook: I use Clover crochet hooks. You need an F / 3.75mm

Other: 1 bobby pin, scissors, yarn needle to hide ends.

Abbreviations: Chain (ch), Slip Stitch (sl st), Double Crochet (dc), Extended Double Crochet (edc)

Gauge: Gauge is not real important for the Autumn Placemat. 18 double crochet = 4 inches, 8 double crochet rows = inches.

Pattern For Autumn Placemat

Category: Easy

Variegated Center

Chain (ch) 4 - connect with a slip stitch (sl st) to form a small circle.

Note: I put a bobby pin in the center of the chain before I do the slip stitch (sl st). This helps me find the exact center when I begin crocheting into it.

Note: During the first round of the Autumn Placemat hold your beginning loose end against your work and crochet around it. This will hide the first loose end and all you'll need to do is snip it.

Rnd 1: Chain (ch) 3.
> 2 double crochet (dc) into and around the small circle. Use the bobby pin to find the center the first time, then remove it.
> Chain (ch) 3. 3 extended double crochet into and around the small circle.
> Chain (ch) 3. 3 double crochet into and around the small circle.
> Chain (ch) 3. 3 extended double crochet into and around the small circle.
> Chain (ch) 3. Slip stitch (sl st) connect to the top of the 1st double crochet (dc) you made.

Rnd 2: Simply turn your work facing the corner you just finished. After you’ve turned your work slip stitch (sl st) around the corner chain and chain (ch) 3.
> 2 double crochet (dc) around the corner chain. Chain (ch) 3. 3 extended double crochet (edc) around the same corner chain.
> Chain (ch) 1. 3 extended double crochet (edc) around the chain of the next corner. Chain (ch) 3. 3 double crochet (dc) around the chain of the same corner.
> Chain (ch) 1. 3 double crochet (edc) around the chain of the next corner. Chain (ch) 3. 3 extended double crochet (dc) around the chain of the same corner.
> Chain (ch) 1. 3 extended double crochet (edc) around the chain of the next corner. Chain (ch) 3. 3 double crochet (dc) around the chain of the same corner.
> Chain (ch) 1, slip stitch (sl st) connect to the first double crochet (dc) stitch (not the chain). Snip the end of the loose thread in the center.

Note: Throughout the variegated center of the Autumn Placemat, when you connect each round, you will always slip stitch (sl st) connect to the top of the double crochet - not into the chain.

Rnd 3: Simply Turn. Sl st around the space (see picture). Ch 3, 2 dc into and around the same space.

Rnd 3, Continued

> Ch 1, 3 dc into corner, ch 3, 3 edc into same corner. Ch 1, 3 edc into the next space.
> Ch 1, 3 edc into corner, ch 3, 3 dc into same corner. Ch 1, 3 dc into the next space.
> Ch 1, 3 dc into corner, ch 3, 3 edc into same corner. Ch 1, 3 edc into the next space.
> Ch 1, 3 edc into corner, ch 3, 3 dc into same corner. Ch 1, sl st connect to the 1st dc stitch (not the ch).

I’m sure by now you have the basic rhythm of the center part of the Autumn Placemat. Make sure to keep the double crochets on the double crochet sides, and the extended double crochets on the extended double crochet sides. Remember that the corners switch from one to the other.

Basic Rhythm

Simply Turn. Sl st around the space. Ch 3, 2 dc around the space.

Each space: Ch 1, 3 dc around space.

First corner: Ch 1, 3 dc around corner, ch 3, 3 edc around the same corner.

Each space: Ch 1, 3 edc around the space.

Second corner: Ch 1, 3 edc around corner, ch 3, 3 dc around the same corner.

Each space: Ch 1, 3 dc around space.

Third corner: Ch 1, 3 dc around corner, ch 3, 3 edc around the same corner.

Each space: Ch 1, 3 edc around the space.

Last corner: Ch 1, 3 edc around corner, ch 3, 3 dc around the same corner.

Last spaces to join: Ch 1, 3 dc around space.

Complete 8 more rounds (a total of 11) making sure to end on the ‘right’ side.

At the end: Sl st 1 additional time and bind off leaving about a 4 inch tail.

Solid Outer Edge of the Autumn Placemat

Finding the exact start location, for the edge of the Autumn Placemat is very important. Set the variegated center down, with the 'joining' edge on top (where your tail end is). Move across the row, to the left corner. Just after the chain that makes the corner, find the first full stitch top, that's where you'll start (see picture). Attach your yarn with a slip stitch (sl st).

Rnd 1: Ch 3 (wrap the tail end under the stitches to automatically hide it). 1 edc in the top of each stitch and 1 around each space, to the corner. Drop the tail before you get to the corner (you can snip it later). Total (counting the chain - not counting the corner): 43

1st Corner: 3 edc, ch 3, 3 dc.

To begin the next side your hook placement, coming out of the corner, is very important. The first stitch can easily become covered by the last stitches in the corner. You want to catch the top of the first stitch (see picture).

2nd Side: 1 dc in the top each stitch and 1 around each space, to the corner. Total (not counting the corner stitches): 43

2nd Corner: 3 dc, ch 3, 3 edc.

3rd Side: 1 edc in the top each stitch and 1 around each space, to the corner. Total (not counting the corner stitches): 43

3rd Corner: 3 edc, ch 3, 3 dc.

4th Side: 1 dc in the top each stitch and 1 around each space, to the corner. Total (not counting the corner stitches): 43

When you get to the location with the slip stitches (mid way on the last side) you want to pick up both the slip stitches, and the stitch you made the slip stitches into. Be careful of your count. Remember you did 2 slip stitches and there's one more stitch after it before you get to the next space. ALSO, pick up the yarn and crochet around it to hide as you go.

4th Corner: 3 dc, ch 3, 3 edc.

To end the round, slip stitch (sl st) into the top of the chain - do not go around the chain, and do not pick up the first stitch (see picture).

To begin the next round, simply turn your work.

Rnd 2: Sl st into the top of the next stitch heading back toward the corner. Ch 3 (counts as a stitch), edc 1 in the next 2 stitches (heading to the corner). You will finish this row at the end.

1st Corner: 2 edc, ch 3, 2 dc.

1st Side: 1 dc in each stitch to the corner. Total (not counting corner stitches) 49.

2nd Corner: 2 dc, ch 3, 2 edc.

2nd Side: 1 edc in each stitch to the corner. Total (not counting corner stitches) 49.

3rd Corner: 2 edc, ch 3, 2 dc.

3rd Side: 1 dc in each stitch to the corner. Total (not counting corner stitches) 49.

4th Corner: 2 dc, ch 3, 2 edc.

4th Side: 1 edc in each stitch to the corner. Total (counting the few stitches and the chain you started with, not counting corner stitches) 49.

After the last stitch sl st into the top stitch of the chain (not around the post).

Rnd 3: Start & 1st side: Simply Turn. Sl st into the top of the next stitch heading away from the corner. Ch 3 (counts as a stitch), edc 1 in each stitch to the corner. You will finish this row at the end just after the last corner.

1st Corner: 2 edc, ch 3, 2 dc.

2nd Side: 1 dc in each stitch to the corner. Total (not counting corner stitches) 53.

2nd Corner: 2 dc, ch 3, 2 edc.

3rd Side: 1 edc in each stitch to the corner. Total (not counting corner stitches) 53.

3rd Corner: 2 edc, ch 3, 2 dc.

4th Side: 1 dc in each stitch to the corner.

4th Corner: 2 dc, ch 3, 2 edc. You should have 3 edc to go to finish the 1st side. Double check your stitches to make sure you will end up with 53.

After the last stitch sl st into the top stitch of the chain (not around the post), and sl st 1 more time into the next stitch. Bind off leaving, at least, 4 inches of tail end.

Finishing The Autumn Placemat: Take the time to snug the loose ends (hopefully you crocheted around them) and snip them. If you forgot to hide as you crocheted you can use your yarn needle to hide them all. Use your yarn needle to hide the last end.
